In the words of the late Jerry Garcia....."Too much of everything is just enough."  At times, while hand coloring this mandala I thought I went too far...too much line, too much color....and then when it was all said and done....I liked it.  It's got that over the top craziness that just makes me feel perfectly fine.  It will give someone plenty to look at during meditation time.  :-)

I bought new markers.  :-)  Something about new art supplies just brings out the best in me.  I had so much fun coloring this one.  It seems so incredibly obvious that it is spring here finally and my colors reflect that in my palette. Such a transformation form the black and white! See previous blog post for the beginning design concept.

Mandala 04-10-14...A work in Progress

I just thought I would share a behind the scenes view of a mandala.  I start from the center with a circle. From that point out I make little lines north, south east and west, then I put in the intermediate points of the compass at northeast, southwest, northwest and southeast.  From that point on I let intuition take over and whatever line or shape comes to mind I trust in it and starting at the north point and continuing clockwise around the circle I repeat the design element. I think that's when I go on auto pilot and begin to relax. As a discipline and a pure love of making mandalas, I create one everyday, usually first thing in the morning (after I get my child off to school).  If I like it and it seems worthy of coloring, I will get to that at some point, and consider it a double blessing.  The first being, I just carved out at least an hour and a half of quiet meditation time.  After that, anything is a bonus! If a design comes out of that quality time, it's a daily double! This morning while I was making this mandala, I started to go a little too fast and I stopped myself, took it down a notch and remembered the wise words of another mandala artist I've come to know, Sarah Clark, "You can't rush a mandala, it just won't have any part of it." Those words came to me at least half a dozen times this morning and I'm so pleased with the results! One of my goals is to keep improving my technique, and going slow is the best way to obtain that goal.  If you want to see some really fine mandala work, please check out Sarah's exquisite designs at  www.sarahclarkdesign.ca.

Hello, and welcome to my website. My name is Jody Cooke and I am a designer living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  I have been an artist in some form or another for over thirty years. My new passion is mandalas! Since I learned about them in January 2013, I have created over 1,500 (black and white) of these circular patterns and over 160 full color.  Some are very small and sketchy, most are 8 inches in diameter, currently I am creating on 24" x 18" paper (transitioning into a Lotus Mandala series as of summer 2017) and one is a 24 inch square acrylic mandala painting on canvas. Definitely not my preferred medium..but I gave it a try!
Making mandalas is the most rewarding creative endeavor of my career.  Each time I sit down to draw I am so excited to see what comes out on the paper.  I feel so fortunate to have found this expressive and spiritual porthole to reveal my true self.  Thank you for visiting my site.
